This isn’t the usual time of year for new yarn introductions, but this is a pretty special yarn.  We are thrilled to be able to offer Supreme Possum Merino yarn to the US market.

There have been possum yarns on and off over the years, but this is a blend that is new, and simply sumptuous.  We were able to get a reasonable supply to take with us to Stitches East, and it was very well received there.

Right now we have the fingering/sport weight in stock, in seven colors.  The description of the weight is tricky, since the possum fur is so light that the yardage is very generous.  The 50 g ball has about 234 yards.  A better description is that it’s 13 wraps per inch (wpi).  The interesting thing about this yarn is that it knits to such a wide variety of gauges, all while looking great.  This yarn would make cozy socks on size 2-3 needles.  The New Zealanders recommend using a size 3 needle for sweater fabric, but when I swatched it I really preferred a size 4 needle, and a size 5 wasn’t out of the question either.  I would certainly consider it for a heavily textured pattern.

The colors are somewhat limited by the possum fur, as it cannot be bleached.  The dye penetrates the wool, possum and silk differently, resulting in heathery hues with depth and interest.  Right now there are seven colors:  Black (not shown below), Denim Blue, Rose Pink, Navy, Mossy Green, Natural and Deep Red.

We’ve sent samples to Knitty for their roundtable knit evaluation–I’ll let you know what we hear back.   This yarn would make a great last minute hat gift, and just one skein will do it.
